Our study was done on sixty families who applied for divorce and whose separation were confirmed by the court. This population was studied with a questionnaire of 57 items for epidemiological data and etiological factors as well.

Participants were compared with sixty similar nuclear families which were randomized according to the rules. Respondents mentioned the following factors as the reasons for applying for divorce:

Incompatible and immoral behavior 83% ,
Intervention of spouse’s family members 42.5% ,
Polygamy 30%,
Behavior opposing religious standard 23%,
Drug dependence,
Alcoholism and gambling 20%,
Irresponsibility of husband to wife 15%,
Abusive behavior by husband 13%,
Feeling of hatred towards husband 10%,
Diagnosis of psychiatric disorders 10%,
Financial problems 10%,
Significant age difference with spouse 10%,
Cultural diversity 10%.

We studied the marriage/divorce ratio in different cities of Western Azarbaijan Province between the years of 1982 and 1994, and we found the lowest figure for Salmas with the ratio of 2.8% and the highest figure for Mahabad with 17.5%. This difference shows that divorce is preventable, and we have put some recommendation.
