Suicide , Size of the Problem , And Factors Leading up to Suicide

According to statistics of the World Health Organization, suicide is among the tenth leading cause of death for all ages in those countries for which information is available. In some countries it is among the top three causes of death for people between 15 and 34 years.

The annual suicide rate as high as 1 per 2,200 population has been reported (e.g. in Lithuania), and as high as 1 per 1,000 population in some isolated regions (e.g. in the Falkland Islands). It is estimated that on average 400,000 people commit suicide every year around the world.
Conceptual models, risk factors and factors leading to suicide, especially the role of stressful life events, have been discussed.
